Atom turns 10: A few words from our CEO
Inside Atom
It’s a week of cake, party hats and sharing special memories here at Atom because we’re turning 10 years old! That’s right, we’re celebrating a decade since the incorporation of our bank, the U.K’s first App only bank, and we’re doing it in style.
It’s certainly been one heck of a journey so far. We’ve created a bank that’s changing the industry for good and improving things for our customers, our people and the world around us. We’re making the experience of saving and borrowing faster, easier and better value than ever before.
In the ten years since we arrived on the fintech scene we’ve:
- Helped 300,000 people save for a rainy day
- Lent over £5 billion to 45,000 mortgage customers
- Assisted over 1,500 businesses with more than £1 billion of financing
Check out some of the most memorable moments from the last 10 years at the bottom of this blog!
Here’s to another decade of changing banking for good.
Of course, we couldn’t let this occasion pass without sharing a few words from Mark Mullen, our CEO and the driving force behind our mission.
Mark Mullen, Atom bank CEO on our first 10 years
It’s been an extraordinary and turbulent decade. In the years since we founded Atom back in April of 2014 we’ve gone from President Obama to Trump to Biden. Closer to home we’ve moved from Prime Minister May to Johnson to Sunak (with a short detour involving Liz Truss along the way). The UK left the European Union. There’s been a global pandemic. There’s a desperate war raging in Europe (everyone should be forced to watch 20 days in Mariupol on Channel 4) and now, tragically, there’s another one raging in the Middle East.
Not everything has gone to hell in a handcart. Taylor Swift and Beyonce still rule the world Barbie has travelled through time from the 1970s.
And along the way, Atom has said hello — and sometimes goodbye — to more than 1,000 people. Right now, our team is 530 people. We are profitable. We’re growing. We have a strong and positive reputation with our customers. We have a supportive and engaged team. Our technology works brilliantly. We invest in our local community. We work to reduce our climate impact.
We’ve achieved a great deal together and I remain convinced that we’ve barely gotten started. I see a big and bright future ahead for Atom. I see years of growth and prosperity and I want that success for everyone associated with the company. But once in a while, once in a decade even, we should take a moment to reflect on what we have already achieved.
I’d like to say thank you to our customers. We are immensely grateful for your trust and your support. Thank you also to our investors. They have been ridiculously patient and kept faith in our vision.
Lastly, but by no means least, thank you to our people — the Atom family. People make companies. We are entirely the product of what we together have created.
Even when the robots rule the world, people will still matter more.
